How to choose shelving by load capacity
Shelving types carry very different loads. Here is how to work out load per level and choose between light, medium and heavy duty safely.
Start with load per level
Weigh or estimate the goods on one level, then add 20–30% as a safety margin.
Pick the shelving type
- Light duty: 100–150 kg per level, for homes and documents
- Medium duty: 300–500 kg per level, for e-commerce stock and spare parts
- Heavy duty: 1,000 kg and up, for pallets and forklifts
Safety tips
Keep heavy items low, spread the load across the whole shelf, and label every level with its maximum load.
